Rites of Warming was funded in part by an Indiegogo campaign and the City of Austin, TX, and received a successful 2-night premier run at the George Washington Carver Museum (Austin, TX). After the conclusion of the show each night, Ammon Taylor hosted a talkback between the audience and Joshua K. Willis, oceanographer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (better known as “Climate Elvis”).

Meet the Performers

  • Veronica Williams, Mezzo-Soprano

    Veronica Williams is an up-and-coming mezzo-soprano known for her “thrilling instrument” and “overwhelming authority” on stage. Most recently in the season, Ms. Williams was invited by Maestro Sebastian Lang Lessing to join the San Antonio Symphony as their first ever Singer-In-Residence. As a result, she captivated audiences at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts as the mezzo soloist in Leonard Bernstein’s ’Symphony I', Manuel De Falla’s ‘El Amor Brujo', and Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Alexander Nevsky’. Ms. Williams received her Master of Music Degree from Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, and her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Previous roles include Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, the Mother in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Baba Yaga in Jason Tremblay's Gretel! The Musical,Ott in Floyd’s Susannah, the titular role in Handel’s Rinaldo, Concepción in Ravel’s L’heure Espagnole, the Old Prioress in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and the title roles of Cesti’s Orontea and Eisler’s Die Mutter. Now based in Austin, Texas, Ms. Williams is a proud member of Local Opera Local Artists (LOLA), One Ounce Opera, and the Texas Concert Opera Collective, and has had the privilege of performing with the Austin Opera chorus for its past three seasons. When Veronica is not performing, she enjoys teaching and guiding talent in her growing and diverse voice studio.

  • Laura Mercado-Wright, Mezzo-Soprano

    Nominated for a Grammy® Award as a soloist in 2015, mezzo soprano Laura Mercado-Wright has been lauded by The New York Times as “superb”, “dramatically astute” and “stunningly agile”. Recent performances include the premiere of Fire In My Mouth by Julia Wolfe with the New York Philharmonic as a member of The Crossing, soloist in Bernstein’s Mass with the Austin Symphony, and a special performance of scenes from Hector Armienta’s opera Bless Me, Ultima at the National Opera Center of America.

    Other notable appearances include Charles Wuorinen’s cantata It Happens Like This with The MET Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, Desireé Armfeldt in A Little Night Music with Alamo City Opera, premieres by Lembit Beecher presenter by Gotham Chamber Opera and Opera Philadelphia, and the west coast premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s one-woman opera, The Raven at the Los Angeles International New Music Festival.

    A Texas native, Ms. Mercado-Wright has appeared as a soloist with the symphony orchestras of Austin, Fort Worth, Plano and Dallas, and frequently performs as a soloist with Conspirare, a Grammy® award-winning vocal ensemble based in Austin.

    Other collaborations include solos with the Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart, Tanglewood Music Festival, Fort Worth Opera, Santa Fe Concert Association, Alamo City Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Los Angeles New Music Festival with Southwest Chamber Ensemble, and the Slee Sinfonietta.

    In addition to a busy performing schedule, Laura owns and operates a professional Christmas caroling company in Austin called Tinsel (www.tinselsingers.com) and maintains a small private voice studio (www.lauramercadowright.com).

  • Grey sa Kalinaw, Baritone

    Grey sa Kalinaw (they/them) is a non-binary, mixed-race (Pilipinx/white), disabled/neurodivergent music-maker and collaborator living on occupied land belonging to the Nʉmʉnʉʉ, Lipan Apache, Tonkawa, and other Indigenous peoples, also called Austin, TX.

    As the Choir Director and Piano Teacher at Crockett HS, they draw upon the wisdom and teachings of decolonization, restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and mindfulness. They also sing with local ensembles and communities (including Ars Longa Ensemble, Inversion Ensemble, the First UU Austin Adult Choir, and Finding Our Voice) and co-facilitate meditation and community with Wake Up Austin.

    Grey lives with their cat, Hendrix, and enjoys photography, yoga, vegan food, and spending time outdoors.

  • Angela Irving, Soprano

    Angela Irving is a classical (but not limited to) singer who graduated from the University of North Texas with a B.M. in Vocal Performance. She teaches private voice lessons to mostly HS students, and sings with a variety of local organizations such as: One Ounce Opera, Tinsel Singers, Inversion Ensemble, Gilbert & Sullivan Austin, among others. Angela loves creating edutainment for her students, being outrageous onstage, and tackling brand new music. Recent performance credits: Phyllis in Gilbert & Sullivan Austin’s production of Iolanthe, a robot named Calco in One Ounce Opera’s production of The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Robot, Inversion Ensemble’s Air concert a few weeks ago, and their 1stever all female choir concert in the Summer.

  • Joseph Quintana, Tenor

    Joseph Quintana is a recent University of Texas at Austin Graduate School alumnus. Favorable credits with the department of Theatre and Dance include Lead Mariachi in Esperanza Rising, Kevin Rosario in In the Heights, Pirandello in Pirandello a new musical, and Tanner in Rose Made Man a new opera. Past credits include the role of Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia and Tamino in Die Zauberflote both with Spotlight on Opera, Beppe in The Pagliacci Project with Austin Opera, and The Red Shadow in El Paso Opera’s production of The Desert Song.

  • Masumi Jones, Drummer

    Moved to the US from Japan to study at Berklee, Masumi started gigging in Boston, NY, toured over US, EU while studying. After Japanese piano trio Groovin' Girls featured at Black Entertainment TV channel program 'BET on Jazz Central', she moved back in Japan, mostly toured with a Big Band 'Blue Aeronauts Orchestra (avex)'

    In 2008, Masumi moved back in US, Austin TX, and since then she has been playing with many Austin bands such as Rich Harney Trio, Mitch Watkins Trio, Jitterbug Vipers, Sarah Sharp, 35mm, etc., also working for NPO 'Austin Jazz Workshop' for years, delivering Jazz Concerts to the all Austin Elementary Schools, playing Theatre for 'Tapestry Tap Dance Company' since 2011, toured China as a American Culture Ambassador, own group 'Masumi and the Gentlemen' was live streamed live concerts "Lunch With Masumi" weekly 2010-2015 featured Rich Harney's original compositions.

  • Gary James, Bassist

    Gary Calhoun James is an Austin based Bassist and multi-instrumentalist who keeps a busy and diverse musical calendar bouncing between performances with Rock, Jazz and Theatre ensembles and his Studio work producing, engineering and performing at local Recording Studio- King Electric.
